The Vic WWTP (Depuradoras de Osona SL) has successfully implemented
VTA Nanofloc A644, distributed by
B2S Renewable Energies, as a solution to persistent issues related to suspended solids loss—particularly during rainfall events and in the presence of filamentous bacteria.
APPLIED TECHNOLOGY - NANOFLOC A644
VTA Nanofloc A644 is a liquid solution formulated with metallic iron nanoparticles (Fe⁰), ranging in size from
1 to 60 nanometres. These nanoparticles offer a very high specific surface area, which significantly enhances floc formation and sedimentation.
Its mechanism of action is based on two complementary principles:
- Short-term action: targets the symptoms of the problem (poor sedimentation).
- Long-term action: through continuous dosing, the product helps eliminate the root cause (eradication of filamentous bacteria).
RESULTS AT THE VIC WWTP
At the Vic plant, testing focused on improving short-term settleability.
The improvements observed after applying Nanofloc A644 were as follows:
- Significant reduction in suspended solids at the secondary clarifier outlet (80% reduction).
- Stabilisation of the sedimentation process under low temperatures and increased hydraulic loads during rainfall or peak flow events.
- Improved sludge blanket compaction and stability, preventing solids loss and enabling reduced recirculation flow.
- Optimisation of sludge recirculation: greater sludge thickening at the bottom of the clarifier leads to higher sludge concentration, reducing internal recirculation to the biological reactor and, consequently, lowering energy consumption.
- No negative impacts on the biological process, ensuring full compatibility of the product with the biomass, without altering plant operation.
By dosing
Nanofloc over a period equivalent to
four sludge retention times, the predominance of filamentous bacteria is eliminated, allowing the
desired biomass to once again dominate. This eradicates the root cause of the problem and prevents poor sedimentation.
